Happy New Year!

2016 almost here.  We've had a wet week closing out 2015.  Donna still got a long bike ride in plus we got a couple of long walks in, too, in between all the showers.  Went to see the movie "The Good Dinosaur" on Wednesday. (This movie got our attention because the animators - when asked what the dinosaur land looked like - responded with "Wyoming".  So we wanted to see what animated Wyoming looked like.) We then closed out the year with a dinner at Cayman Grill (Orange Beach) with the Folks-On-Spokes this evening.  So now we're watching the college football playoffs like a lot of others to round out the evening & the year.  Here's hoping you have a very healthy 2016!  David & Donna

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!  Hope everyone is having a great holiday!

We're having a very warm & wet Christmas down here.  Seems to be the norm for most of the southeast this year.  Donna still getting out with the Folks-on-Spokes group.  We watched another movie (Star Wars, of course).  And we're still eating out too much - but that's the norm down here.

Many of the seasonal folks have gone home for the holidays, but most have stayed in town.  We got in a Christmas Eve Service this evening at the Gulf Coast Methodist Church with several members of the Folks-on-Spokes.  Then had dinner at a local Waffle House.  (We're told it's "tradition".)  Each year the state park holds a pot luck (meat provided) on Christmas Day with seatings at noon and 2:30.  We'll help out with the setup & serve for the first seating and eat at the second seating.  (That's our "tradition".)  At least that's our plan.

Anyway, everyone be safe out there and have a good time.  Later, David

Rain

Well, our late summer weather has changed to rain with a promise of cooler temps for this weekend.  We're still gettin' out, though.  Donna still rides with the F-O-S.  We've met with the NuWaOwners Forum group for lunch at Mikee's.  We also got out for dinner this past weekend with Bernie & Sue while the lighted-boat Christmas Parade passed by (picture, above, from last year's parade).  Sue & Donna also made a shopping trip out to Fairhope, too.  And we worked in a movie, popcorn & pretzel.  So we've had a somewhat "busy" week.  Looks like more of the same for next week, too.  Except it's Christmas next week.  Soooooo Merry Christmas!  Later, David

Weekly Update

We're settling into our winter routine here in Gulf Shores.  Been one of our warmest visits here so far.  75 today for the high.  That'll change.  The Folks-on-Spokes are gettin' out three days a week plus their weekly campfires where there's more than enough food.  The Hitchhikers are getting out & about, too.  So far it's just been the weekly lunches at Mikees.  Donna finally got to ride her bicycle out to Fort Morgan & back - a 50 mile round trip from the trailer.    We'll have to wait & see what's next on her bucket list.  And we got all our Shrimp Basket Gift Certificates, yesterday.  So cheap shrimp is on the way!

In other news, we still got our water leak to the washer.  This week the spring broke on the seal return lever on the toilet.  Had a new one - shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to replace, so off I go.  It was an hour before I got the the toilet working, again.  It's only two screws to remove and reinsert.  And the parts only fit one way. I still don't understand why you have to take the thing apart and reassemble three times before it finally works correctly.  Donna said she had to reassemble it all twice when we replaced the water valve on the toilet.  Shoulda let her do it.  Or better, yet, replace the spring when we replaced the water valve.

Medicare says that they now know I'm retired (but we can't tell from the mymedicare page.)  So I can only speculate that when we told them I had health insurance, they assumed I was still working.  As I go back and read medicare's instructions, it appears that's what they do.  Guess it was too hard to design the page with a box to check indicating I'm still working or truly retired.  (BTW:  it's all designed to determine who pays first.  If you or your spouse are employed, Medicare is second payer.)

I've also lived through the fiasco of the new Weight Watchers website and app.  Both appear to be working and are aesthetically appealing, but missing some functions that were useful in the old website and app.  It's still got it's "bugs", too.  This morning I selected an item from my "favorite" list to track.  The app provided a "pop-up" noting that I had tracked that item three times this week & asking if I'd like to make it a "favorite".  I guess it didn't get the word that I had picked that item from my "favorite" list in the first place.  "Always in Beta" is the new software industry's mantra & Weight Watchers got caught in it, I guess.  I probably should at least celebrate that the Weight Watchers app lets me log in!

So that's all that's happened this week.  Everyone enjoy their weekend.  We may get some rain during ours.  Later, David

Back @ Gulf State Park, AL

We left Pelham, AL a little early to beat the predicted rainy weather and got down here on Sunday.  Dad & Anna were a little "under the weather", so it was probably best we left them alone, anyway.  Biggest surprise when we got here was running into Greg, Judy, Don & Zola at Mickee's when we went there for an early dinner.  Had a great time catching up with them and really enjoyed the time. The Folks-on-Spokes guys are arriving down here, too.  Donna got a ride in with them yesterday for ice cream, but unfortunately, missed today's ride.

As with all things in life, things happen.  The Friday before we left Pelham, we broke a water line in the trailer and flooded the basement storage area and left our campsite muddy.  We got all the stuff out of that area quickly and Donna mopped up the storage floor before we took on finding the leak.  With me working the water pump and switches at the water system manifold, Donna (with flashlight in hand) located the leak at a connection in the hot water line to the washer.

After an hour of trying to get up there between the bedroom floor and the top of the generator box, we had no success and decided to shut off all the water to the washer at the manifold until we could get someone here in the Gulf Shore area to look at it. This also served as a reminder that RV manufacturers don't plan for repairs to RVs.  That doesn't mean it can't be done, but that little to no thought, consideration or effort is given to the ability to make future repairs when RV manufacturers design their products.  Like Microsoft Office Products (remember, I'm part of that generation that made Bill Gates a billionaire selling us software that didn't work), even new RVs must be fixed before anyone can use them.  So one would think they would give that some thought & effort before they design & built an RV. Apparently, not.

Anyway, we've had it looked at, repaired, and it still leaks.  We may have the whole fitting replaced before we leave, but we're guessing it won't be truly be fixed until we get back to Lagrange, IN in May.

In other news, we learned that the default answer to any Medicare claim is "no" - typical for any private insurance whether it be home, auto, health, life, extended warranty, etc, though I didn't expect it from Medicare based on all the positive, upbeat, literature they send us.  Apparently, Medicare thinks I'm still working - probably because we gave a wrong answer on the form when Donna applied for Medicare Part B.  So they think the insurance from the company I work for is primary and should pay first.  It appears there's no option on that form Donna completed way back when to indicate that I'm retired and using health insurance from a former employer.  Consequently, it seems any answer we chose was most likely wrong.  Never mind that all that well-woman, preventive health care services that Medicare so loudly proclaims to cover doesn't take effect until your second year of Medicare coverage.  Way to go DC!  No wonder they got the Affordable Care Act wrong.  They didn't even design Medicare to be useful!  What a "great" benefit everyone gets to pay for!

At least Donna let me revert back to my bureaucratic ways and yell at the lady over the phone that I was tired of them lying to us while Donna read to them from Medicare's own information that said Medicare paid first.  In theory, Donna's Medicare data is now being corrected to note that I'm retired. Then all the claims are to be resubmitted.  After Donna talked to all the doctor offices she visited while in Fredericksburg, everyone seems to easily accept this may take quite awhile.

Sooooo...we've had an eventful week.  At least the Blue Heron in the above picture knows what it's doing. (That's a fish cleaning station it's watching.)  Later, David
